Dyno results just in from one of our customers on his new twin turbocharged alcohol Big Block: dyno’d 2,500+ HP at 25 psi boost with a turbo setup capable of 50 psi boost. He reports that the most boost that he is currently seeing in the installation is 35 psi, blowing the tires away on the drag racecar.

In our drag racing, we did use air to fuel ratio as a controlled value to get the engine into a linear range. That task is an extensive explanation through out writings. The linear range is where the engine is completely predictable. We achieved that very well in our racing. (more…)

Question: What is pure methanol?
Answer: If it is sold as pure methanol, it is supposed to be well over 99% methanol. It is a baseline compound that should behave the same regardless of supplier unless it is mixed with something else such as a top end lube or it is contaminated. (more…)

Question: Methanol for both IHRA and NHRA Drag Racing
Answer: Both organizations test methanol with different methods. If you have fuel that passes one organization, it may or may not pass the other organization all of the time. I met the fuel check supervisors for both organizations when I was developing 5000 Horsepower on Methanol, and they were both knowledgeable and helpful. Information from both sources is in our methanol book.

Question: Top lube?
Answer: Most racers I have talked to have good success with top lube to inhibit corrosion. Some previous info mentioned some accumulation over time. The reason NHRA and IHRA do not allow it in fuel checks is they cannot distinguish between power enhancing additives (illegal) and top lube in their tests. So you are stuck with the mostly pure stuff for the national and divisional class racing. More info on top lubes in 5000 Horsepower on Methanol.

Question: I turned my blower overdrive up. Why does my boost gage read higher boost for my blower size and overdrive than many of my competitors?
Answer: An increase in boost reading from higher blower speeds over another car with the same blower speed is not necessarily an indication of more air. It may be from more heating, (more…)

Question: Fuel injection adjustment with launch controls for a torque converter racecar
Answer: When a mechanical fuel injection throttle is part open, such as in preparation for launching from the starting line using throttle control setups, the air to fuel ratio is dependent on that throttle position at the time just before the launch. (more…)
